VeriFone to Exit Mobile POS Acquiring Business

Verifone logo 140pxDuring the fourth-quarter teleconference with analysts, VeriFone announced that it is stepping back from its role as an direct acquirer for SAIL merchants.

Earlier this year, we launched SAIL as a way to bridge the gap between the way our traditional channel partners conduct business and the specific needs of very small micro-merchants. Our experience through 2012 with tens of thousands of these micro-merchants tells us that the standalone economics of micro-merchant acquiring is fundamentally unprofitable and destined to be a negative gross margin business. Customer acquisition costs either through search engines or TV advertising cannot and will never justify the razor-thin margins produced by merchants with infrequent volume and extremely high attrition.
The company will continue to market SAIL products through banking partners and ISOs. Digital Transactions has a good story on the strategy shift.

PayPal logo 140x60pxPayPal has announced the next 15 national retail partners that will be testing PayPal In-Store Checkout.

In every market we’ve entered PayPal has changed the game. We were the first major player to enter the mobile space in 2006 and we plan to exceed $7 billion in mobile payment volume this year. And we’re on track to change the game again in offline payments.
In related go-to-market news, PayPal also announced POS partnerships with terminal providers VeriFone (press release, website details) and Equinox (press release) as well as mid-market POS software providers Leapset, ShopKeep (video), Vend (video), and Erply (video).

Payments Views - PayPal Takes on Square and the Square Wannabes

GP Logo Horizontal 140pxOver on Payments Views, Glenbrook's Erin McCune blogs about the recent PayPal Here announcement, and her take on what it means to Square and the Square Wannabes.

The story here is simplicity. The merchant fee for PayPal Here transactions is 2.7%. Slightly lower than Square, and about the same as Intuit GoPayments. The big differences is access to funds. Just like online merchants, offline merchants are credited sales into their PayPal account in real-time as purchases complete.
