  • Home Depot Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Visa, MasterCard - Wall St. Journal -"This time, the do-it-yourself retailer also contends that Visa and MasterCard colluded to prevent the adoption of new chip-based cards that require consumers to enter a personal identification number, or PIN, to authorize a transaction."
  • Visa Defends Fees in Wal-Mart Canada Dispute - "In an advertisement to be published in Canadian newspapers on Thursday, the payments network said it is disappointed that Wal-Mart is threatening to stop accepting Visa at its stores."
  • Wells Fargo’s new credit card comes with mobile-enabled tracking - Mobile Commerce Daily - "Cash Track is a subset of Wells Fargo’s online banking, available exclusively to new credit card Cash Wise members, and allows customers to view rewards, set goals, track progress and view lifetime rewards on their mobile devices."


  • Visa to Help Accelerate EMV Chip Migration and Support Merchants - "Visa has streamlined its testing requirements, amended and simplified the terminal certification process, and committed to investing further resources and technical expertise in a manner that can reduce timeframes by as much as 50 percent. Visa is also making policy changes to help limit exposure to counterfeit fraud liability for merchants who are not yet chip-ready."

  • Payments Canada, Bank of Canada Research Highlights Global Trend Towards Faster Payments - "The research, Clearing and Settlement Systems from Around the World: A Qualitative Analysis, identifies a series of commonalities between jurisdictions with modernized payment systems, but reveals there is no “one size fits all” approach to modernizing payments. Each country’s path to modernization is unique, shaped by local public policy priorities, user needs and legacy payment systems."
  • Chase Customers Can Now Send Money to More People in Real Time - "Chase customers sent $20 billion in person-to-person transactions through Chase QuickPay last year. USA Technologies and Isis Bring Mobile Commerce to Vending Machines

USATechnologies logo 140x60pxUSA Technologies announced up to 7,500 vending machines in Austin and Salt Lake City will be targeted for mobile payment acceptance powered by USAT’s NFC-enabled ePort technology and ePort Connect service in order to participate in the Isis Mobile Wallet market trial.
“Our work with Isis is a great example of how we are executing our comprehensive mobile payments strategy, including leveraging USAT’s growing footprint of NFC enabled touch points to bring more value to our customers,” said Stephen P. Vending Sales Analysis Finds Consumers Spend More With Payment Cards

USATechnologies logo 140x60pxUSA Technologies has announced that "based on its July 2011 survey of over 10,000 traditional vending machines utilizing its ePort cashless payment system, consumers, on average, spent one-third more when making a cashless purchase than a cash purchase. In addition, cashless purchases made up approximately 26% of all sales at these vending machines."

More Coca-Cola Vending Machines Enabled for Card Payments

MasterCard and USA Technologies have announced the "installation of a record number of cashless payment terminals into Coca-Cola Enterprises vending machines in several markets nationwide. Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., the world's largest non-alcoholic beverage bottler, will install the new terminals in selected vending machines in the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Seattle markets." The enabled vending machines will accept both mag stripe and contactless payment cards.

SkyeTek, in partnership with Isochron, has announced they have enabled cashless payment at vending machines located throughout the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Consumers equipped with RFID enabled credit cards can now make a purchase by just waving a card within a few feet of the new vending machines.

Prof Predicts Cashless Vending On Campus

Fredricka Paul reports for The State News that Michael Kasavana, Michigan State University National Automatic Merchandising Association-endowed professor, predicts that vending machines that accept credit and debit cards will become more popular in coming years. "By 2009, half of the six million vending machines will be capable of having cashless technology," Kasavana said. "About half of those will have card readers."

She reports that Visa believes opportunities for card-based payments are "particularly ripe in two areas: vending and transit services that are "unattended," or where people have to serve themselves."

SodaVision - A Biometric Vending Machine

Andy Williams writes CR80News about a biometric vending machine developed by graduate students at the University of California San Diego. "Want a Coke? Stick your thumb on the reader so the machine recognizes you as having an account, take out the drink, scan it with the barcode reader, then walk way, never having had to reach into your pocket for change." The project is the brainchild of UCSD engineering associate professor Stefan Savage.

Networks Begin to Make a Case for Cards at Vending Machines

Digital Transactions previews an upcoming story about cashless vending, touching on the general trend towards higher ticket sizes at vending machines.
Currently, no more than 3% of the 8 million vending machines deployed in the U.S. accept credit cards, according to Michael L. Kasavana, a professor in hospitality business at Michigan State University. That figure is expected to reach 50% in 2009, says Kasavana.
The article says that vending machines generate about $45 billion in sales annually, according to London-based Research firm Mintel International Group Ltd.
