  • In Las Vegas, Alternative Currency Buffs Are Making The Case That Bitcoin WIll Do To Money What The Web Did To Information - "Bitcoin today is in a similar state that the Internet was in 1992. It's functional and useful, but the great use cases are only just now happening. It's only going to get better and better."
  • India’s audacious plan to bring mobile payments to the masses: pair them with a national ID card - Quartz - "Nandan Nilekani, a founder of Infosys and the man in charge of the Aadhar scheme, suggested last week that the platform the cards run on will be extended to include peer-to-peer money transfers."
  • Ripple Takes on Western Union With Deal to Grow Payments - Bloomberg - "Ripple, a San Francisco-based startup, operates payments software and a digital currency that resides in a consumer’s account known as a Ripple Wallet. First Data, Tyfone Partner for MicroSD-based Mobile Payments

First Data Corporation has announced an agreement with Tyfone to provide SideTap micro secure digital (MicroSD) memory cards equipped with Tyfone’s patented technologies to enable most mobile phones with a memory slot to function as a mobile contactless payment device. READ MORE »

Tyfone Updates Launch Plans for SideTap MicroSD Cards

Tyfone has announced that its SideTap micro secure digital (MicroSD) memory card versions will be available via partners in the second half of 2010. According to Tyfone, these MicroSD memory cards with Tyfone’s SideTap contactless payment technology can be used by "hundreds of millions of mobile phones at thousands of existing contactless payment terminals worldwide. These cards will work in phones with MicroSD slot on any side of the phone – top, left, right, bottom or back." READ MORE »

Tyfone Receives Patent for Mobile Electronic Wallet Technology

tyfone-logo-150.jpgTyfone has announced the it was awarded a second patent - US 7,581,678, is entitled “Electronic Transaction Card - for its innovations in smart card-based electronic wallet technology.

According to Tyfone, "using time-varying magnetic fields, Tyfone’s patented technology enables the use of a memory card as an electronic wallet and/or the ability to use that memory card for the secure transmission of financial information." READ MORE »

Tyfone Completes Testing of Secure Mobile Memory Card for NFC

Satyam, Tyfone Partner on Mobile Financial Services

Satyam Computer Services has announced that it has entered into an alliance with Tyfone, a provider of mobile financial services, infrastructure and mobile payments capabilities to collaborate "to provide businesses with an even greater edge when competing in the mobile financial services sector. The alliance combines Satyam's deep domain expertise and system integration experience with Tyfone's complete mobile financial services infrastructure, and will provide institutions with enhanced solutions and technology." A Look at Tyfone's Mobile Payments Approach

Tyfone was one of the companies demoing at the recent Finovate Startup conference in San Francisco (see my notes here). In a press release this morning, Tyfone said they'll be at the Payments 2008 conference in Las Vegas next week demonstrating its mobile payments technology.

What's interesting about Tyfone's approach is their effort to be independent of both handset device suppliers as well as wireless operators. The Tyfone solution is based upon a 'mobile phone memory card with SmartCard RFID/Near Field Communications (NFC) technology' - that plugs into the memory card slot on mobile handsets suitably equipped. I'm not sure what percentage of handsets have those slots - but I suspect it'll grow as more functionality is added to them. READ MORE »
