World Payments Report 2012

Rbs logo 140x60pxDebit cards continue to gain global market share from credit cards, and the use of electronic and mobile payments continues to show exponential growth concludes the World Payments Report 2012 released by Capgemini, RBS, and Efma.
“Debit card transactions continue to take market share from other types of payment methods because they easily allow people to bypass the use of cash,” said Kevin Brown, Global Head, Transaction Services Product, International Banking, RBS. “As more and more consumers move to mobile and other electronic payments, we’ll continue to see the exponential growth of innovative payment solutions.”

The World Payments Report 2012 also highlights that Brazil now the third largest non-cash market in the world after the US and the Eurozone.

Royal Bank of Scotland to Divest Global Merchant Services Unit

As part of its agreement with the UK government announced today, the Royal Bank of Scotland has agreed to participation in a revised Asset Protection Scheme that, among many other conditions, requires RBS to divest itself of several businesses over the next four years including its Global Merchant Services unit. According to RBS, its Global Merchant Services unit "is the fourth largest provider of global card payment services, enabling over 5 billion card transactions to be made each year. It meets the rapidly changing and increasingly sophisticated needs of clients to accept card payments on a global, efficient and secure basis."

O2, NatWest Launch O2 Money in UK

O2_logo-140px.jpgO2 has announced it has partnered with NatWest to launch of O2 Money, a new business within O2 that the company says 'will seek to advance the increasing synergies between mobile and money. RBS to Issue Visa Debit Cards in US and UK

In an article titled "RBS Switches to Visa for Its Debit Cards", Robin Sidel reports for the Wall St. Journal that, beginning in mid-2009, Royal Bank of Scotland Group is switching its debit card issuance from MasterCard to Visa in both the US and the UK.

PayPal Launches Top-Up Prepaid Visa Card in UK

In the UK, PayPal has announced the launch of a new prepaid top up card, the PayPal Top Up card - a reloadable VISA card and that PayPal says can be used almost anywhere the VISA symbol is displayed. PayPal says the card "gives people control over their spending, allowing them to pay as they go. It’s also ideal for consumers who do not have credit or debit cards, and want some way to spend their cash online." Tesco Takes Over Financial Services Portfolio from RBS

In the UK, Tesco has announced that it has reached an agreement with The Royal Bank of Scotland to buy from RBS its 50% shareholding in Tesco Personal Finance Group Limited for £950 million. Tesco says it "will enable Tesco over time to extend its financial services business from a collection of popular financial products to that of a full service retail bank offering more choice, innovation and value to customers, and better returns to shareholders."   • Roy Vella has been named Director of Mobile at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group leading RBS' global efforts in pursuit of opportunities at the intersection of mobile telephony and financial services. Vella spent the past five years with PayPal - most recently as PayPal's Head of Mobile Payments in Europe.

Royal Bank of Scotland Announces New Mobile Banking Service

No, it's not what you think. I had to smile as I read the press release announcing that "The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has announced plans to launch a new mobile banking service in Yorkshire, operating from York and running five days a week. The new mobile service will provide banking to around twenty Yorkshire communities and the service will start in February 2007." These are banks on wheels, not banks on your mobile phones.

RBS Drops Convenience Cheques In The UK

The Guardian reports on a decision by RBS to abandon providing its cardholders credit card cheques (aka as "convenience cheques"). In the UK, pressure has been building against the banks as regulators and consumer groups have been challenging the practice while the banks claim they provide the cheques for their cardholders' benefit. According to one industry analyst, the cheques "cost more than using your card, you don't get an interest-free period even if you pay off the balance immediately, and you don't get the same protection as when you use your card."

RBS to Lend through Coffee Shops in Germany

The Financial Times reports on plans by the Royal Bank of Scotland's Comfort Cards division to expand its consumer lending presence in Germany through a partnership with Tchibo.
