Isis Announces Support from POS Vendors for Proprietary NFC SmartTap™ Acceptance

Isis logo 140x60pxIsis has announced that a number of payment terminal manufacturers and software providers are integrating its Isis-proprietary SmartTap™ capabilities into a wide range of point-of-sale (POS) offerings. Vendors include Ingenico, VeriFone, Equinox, Wayne, Gilbarco Veeder-Root among others.

Isis says its SmartTap protocol is "a new, proprietary mobile commerce software specification that leverages near field communications (NFC) technology, a standard feature on most new smartphones. When supported in an NFC reader or payment terminal, the SmartTap protocol enables Isis Mobile Wallet™ users to pay, present loyalty cards and redeem offers in a single transaction." A SmartTap-enabled POS terminal automatically recognizes and applies loyalty cards loaded in the Isis Mobile Wallet. Similarly, Isis Mobile Wallet users benefit from the ability to receive, store and present offers with SmartTap-enabled merchants.

“NFC is the international standard for mobile payments,” said Jim Stapleton, chief sales officer, Isis.

“The proliferation of SmartTap capabilities at the point-of-sale takes mobile payments one step further, providing rich commerce features that offer an effortless consumer experience and drive engagement and loyalty in a way previously not possible. By providing Isis Ready™ solutions, POS, payment terminal and reader providers can deliver innovative technologies that will benefit merchants for years to come.”

“Roughly one-sixth of U.S. payment terminals are replaced each year. To fully benefit from mobile payments, this hardware replacement must be accompanied with a software infrastructure that enables the compelling shopping, selling and loyalty solutions that will drive changes in merchant and consumer behavior,” said Rick Oglesby, senior analyst, Aite Group. “This announcement demonstrates Isis’ resolve in bringing a fully functioning mobile commerce environment to market with their national rollout.”

Groupon Adds POS Terminal Support to Payments Offerings

Groupon logo 140x60pxGroupon has announced the addition of credit card terminals to the company’s existing payments suite for local businesses. Local businesses will have three options to implement Groupon’s payments service on a credit card terminal: configure an existing Verifone and Ingenico device; purchase a Verifone vx520 from Groupon for $150 (with no monthly contract or fees); or rent a Verifone vx520 to own for $15 per month (for 12 months).

“While merchants are attracted to the easy signup, low and transparent pricing and powerful analytics provided by our payments service, not all merchants are ready to immediately adopt an iPad or iPhone for their credit card processing needs,” said Sean Harper, director of product, Groupon.

“We anticipate that most merchants will eventually migrate their payments to tablet and mobile POS systems, but for now, this option lets them use familiar hardware and still benefit from the features of our payments service to save money and better manage their businesses.”

VeriFone Introduces VeriFone Point Payment-as-a-Service Offering to US Market

Verifone logo 140pxVeriFone has announced the launch of VeriFone Point, a payment-as-a-service solution that the company says simplifies the complexities of payment for the company’s direct merchant customers and channel partners in the U.S. The VeriFone Point solution features a cost-predictable subscription model for obtaining and maintaining all the components of a complete payments solution including software, management services, device acquisition, and maintenance, which enables these organizations to spend less time and money on payments and devote more resources to improving their business.

“Merchants and service providers don’t want to deal with the complexities of managing PCI, EMV and emerging payments and mobile wallet technologies. They want to focus on serving their customers and growing their business,” said Jennifer Miles, president, VeriFone Americas.

“VeriFone Point offers these organizations a way out of the complexity of business by providing a flexible and reliable toolkit that is managed by the company they trust for payments.”

The VeriFone Point solution utilizes a secure network integration between the VeriFone device and payment processor systems, enabling merchants and service providers to quickly and easily integrate the latest mobile wallets, emerging payments technologies, and EMV specifications, again reducing the scope and expense of compliance and recertification.

Additionally, with this integration, data can be encrypted, securely routed for processing to the merchant’s acquirer and tokenized, decoupling the actual payment transaction from the merchant’s POS systems. According to VeriFone, "this process significantly reduces the risk of costly and embarrassing data breaches, and vastly reduces the scope and expense of PCI compliance and recertification."

Pricing is subscription-based, enabling each organization to better predict the current and future costs of managing payments. The VeriFone Point solution is now available to U.S. merchants and service providers.

It's Cash Register Day in the New World of POS!

A couple of interesting announcements were made today in the world of point-of-sale and next generation "cash registers":

  • PayPal logo 140x60pxPayPal introduced a new "Cash for Registers" program - including offering "free credit, debit card, check, and of course PayPal processing for the remainder of the year to any qualifying U.S business turning in their dusty old cash register in exchange for a modern solution like PayPal Here (iPad, card reader, iPad stand, cash drawer, and printer)."

See PayPal's David Marcus' blog post about the new program.

Here's a TechCrunch story on the program.

  • Square logo 140pxSquare has announced Square Stand, calling it "beautiful new hardware for brick and mortar businesses that turns an iPad into a complete point of sale." Square Stand includes an integrated card reader that keeps information secure from swipe to payment, and easily connects to the hardware accessories businesses need, including a receipt printer, kitchen printer, cash drawer, and barcode scanner.

Here's a TechCrunch story on Square Stand.

Also, see this Fortune interview with Square CEO Jack Dorsey and Jesse Dorogusker, a former Apple exec who led the development of Stand: "A bamboo stand can be very beautiful and there's a lot of great craftwork out there, but it doesn't have the intelligence of this system."

  • Groupon logo 140x60pxGroupOn also introduced "Breadcrumb POS, a free, easy to use, and reliable iPad point of sale that will blow your cash register away. It offers the functionality that cafés, health and beauty businesses and shop owners need." The company also said that "as of today we’re throwing in free processing on the first $5,000 in credit card transactions."

Equinox Introduces Apollo - A New Merchant POS Platform

Equinox logo 140pxEquinox Payments has announced the launch of Apollo - calling it "an entirely new technology platform focused on secure payment acceptance. The platform combines state-of-the-art hardware and software to provide merchants and their customers with a reliable, secure and intuitive experience at the point of sale."

Equinox says Apollo is its first major platform initiative since the company divested from Hypercom and will be initially targeted at small- and medium-sized businesses through the company’s extensive network of processor and ISO partners.

“Apollo represents a critical milestone both for delivering smarter technology and as proof of our final transition from the Hypercom legacy to a strong and independent Equinox,” said Patrick Hazel, Equinox Chairman and Chief Executive. “We are extremely pleased and excited to take this major step towards fulfilling our promise to build a major payments brand.”

Equinox says its new Apollo Customer Facing Device is EMV ready and capable of accepting alternative payments including contactless/NFC, PayPal, Google, Isis and other mobile wallets and services.

Separately, Equinox announced that Vantiv is planning to Class A certify the Apollo platform.

What's a Bank To Do? - EMV, Authentication and Bank Disintermediation

PaymentsViews logo 140pxOver on our Payments Views, Glenbrook's George Peabody shares his observations about the confluence of EMV chip card migration, mobile devices and authentication in the US market.

While EMV injects dynamic data into the payment message (as well as clear text PANs), it is an otherwise mostly static, single purpose platform. Compare that to the mobile device, which combines static data (SIM serial number, etc.) with recognizable configuration profiles for device fingerprinting, context-specific dynamic data such as location plus application-specific PIN or biometric entry. And that all happens before the payment transaction takes place.
