Early Warning, Payfone Partner for Mobile Authentication Services

Early warning logo 140pxIn a press release this morning, Early Warning says that it "has taken steps to dramatically advance the state of mobile authentication technologies.

Through an equity investment and commercial agreement with Payfone, a leading mobile authentication company, Early Warning will now provide carrier-based device and account owner identity authentication combined with unrivaled financial transaction and identity data, ensuring a secure and seamless mobile experience for financial services customers. ... Through the services to be offered by Early Warning, financial institutions and payment processors gain a higher level of identity and device confidence to more assuredly authorize mobile transactions and protect carrier subscribers."

Paul Finch, CEO of Early Warning, said:

“The current authentication system must do more to protect the consumer and the global financial system as mobile has become a critical channel for banking and commerce. Passwords, knowledge-based questions and even device-centric security are insufficient protection from malware and identity-related breaches. The traditional convenience versus security trade-off has reached its limit. Now, through real-time integration with mobile carriers via Payfone, Early Warning provides an entirely new level of mobile security while delivering a streamlined mobile experience.”
By integrating with the network-based authentication capabilities of tier one mobile carriers via Payfone, Early Warning will provide a deterministic level of mobile identity that it says "far surpasses traditional and device-centric authentication measures." By leveraging the same SIM card-based network authentication that mobile operators use to secure their own services, Early Warning can verify account logins and financial transactions with more precision and convenience. Furthermore, common events such as managing lost and stolen phones, changing mobile carriers and porting phone numbers are managed in real-time without involvement from the consumer.

“The Internet has no identity infrastructure in its plumbing, while the mobile carriers authenticate identity in real-time for billions of consumers based on global GSMA and CDMA standards. Payfone brings this deep network-based identity authentication that effectively underwrites more than $300 billion in telecom services annually to financial institutions. It was only a matter of time that these two worlds converged,” said Payfone CEO Rodger Desai.

MasterCard, Visa and American Express Propose New Global Standard to Make Online and Mobile Shopping Simpler and Safer

Visa, MasterCard and American Express have announced a proposed framework for a new global standard to enhance the security of digital payments and simplify the purchasing experience when shopping on a mobile phone, tablet, personal computer or other smart device.

According to the companies, "the proposed standard would allow the traditional account number to be replaced with a digital payment “token” for online and mobile transactions. With a token, consumers will no longer be required to enter an actual account number when shopping online or on a smart device. Tokens provide an additional layer of security and eliminate the need for merchants, digital wallet operators or others to store account numbers."

“For more than five decades, the payments industry has relied on standards to safely and consistently process payments,” said Jim McCarthy, Global Head of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Visa Inc. “As more consumers make purchases with mobile phones, tablets and PCs, we are committed to showing industry leadership in the development of new standards that offer the same interoperability, reliability and security as traditional card payments.”

“This continued transition from plastic cards to digital is all about providing consumers with the ability to easily and safely make a purchase. They would no longer need to store their actual card account number when shopping online or with a smart device; the token would serve as that stand-in,” said Ed McLaughlin, Chief Emerging Payments Officer, MasterCard. “This proposed global standard builds on our track record of working across the industry to deliver safe and secure payment products. What we're introducing today is comparable to how the industry came together to develop and use the magnetic stripe, EMV and NFC on a global scale.”

“By working together to form a common global standard for online and mobile shopping, we will be able to provide enhanced security, interoperability and consistency for all participants within the digital payments ecosystem,” said Mike Matan, Head of Global Network Business, American Express. “In addition, we will be able to drive the rapid adoption and expansion of digital payments, delivering innovative new products and services that will allow consumers to realize the full potential of digital commerce in today’s world.”

Key elements of the proposed standard include:

  • New data fields to provide richer information about the transaction, which can help improve fraud detection and expedite the approval process
  • Consistent methods to identify and verify a consumer before replacing the traditional card account number with a token
  • A common standard designed to simplify the process for merchants for contactless, online or other transactions

Once a standard is agreed to and implemented, issuers, merchants or digital wallet providers would be able to request a token so that when an account holder initiates an online or mobile transaction, the token – and not the traditional card account number – would be used to process, authorize, clear and settle the transaction in the same way traditional card payments are processed today. Tokens can be restricted in how they are used with a specific merchant, device, transaction or category of transactions.

The three companies say that the proposed framework has incorporated the input of many stakeholders, particularly card issuers and merchants. Over the coming weeks, the framework will also be presented to other partners and independent industry bodies, such as The Clearing House, PCI Security Standards Council and EMVCo, to align and further advance the standard.

We're reminded that The Clearing House announced a similar dynamic credentialing initiative earlier this year.

Digital River Launches Mobile Payments Acceptance Solutions

Digital river world payments logo 140pxDigital River has announced the launch of Beanstream Mobile, a suite of mobile payment solutions for iOS and Android devices that enables merchants to turn mobile devices into "a portable card swipe, cash register and comprehensive solution." Beanstream Mobile works with an encrypted card reader and a free downloadable app.

“Existing mobile payment solutions have fallen short for merchants with multi-currency operations, in-store and online sales, and inventories,” said Souheil Badran, senior vice president and general manager, global payments and commerce at Digital River.

“Now, merchants will be able to unify their payment channels with one device and accept credit card mobile payments in 140 currencies through an integration with Digital River World Payments’ international bank connections.”

Unlike most mobile payment solutions, Beanstream Mobile’s interface and encrypted card reader are specifically designed to be white-labeled by brands and financial institutions.

The free Beanstream Mobile apps are now available in the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores. Beanstream API is also available for developers who wish to integrate mobile payment capabilities into their application.

Lemon Launches Lemon Network to Ease Mobile Payments

Lemon logo 140x60pxMobile wallet provider Lemon has announced the launch of Lemon Network, an enhancement to the Lemon Wallet app that will allow consumers to make purchases from merchants with the Lemon Network without having to re-enter their card information each time. Lemon Network is offered to merchants as a free software development kit (SDK).

"We see the Lemon Network as a true step forward in the mobile payment space,” said Lemon Chief Sales Officer Jenna Wyer.

“Consumers will quickly see the benefit of using the Lemon Network for mobile shopping as well as web shopping. They can update their credit card information in one place—the Lemon Wallet—so any card being used via the Lemon Network to make purchases is always an updated card, not expired. Plus, the individual merchants are not storing consumers’ cards, Lemon is. This means consumer transactional identity is being stored in just one location, not on multiple merchant apps, making mobile and web shopping safer and simpler.”

In addition to credit cards, users can also store merchant rewards cards, identification and insurance cards in the Lemon Wallet. The Lemon Network SDK is now available for merchant download. For more information, visit http://lemon.com/network/.

Movida 140pxMovida, the mobile payments joint venture between Visa Inc. and Monitise, has announced a deal with ICICI Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, to utilize Movida’s mobile payments service for the Bank’s customers. The service will enable ICICI Bank payment card holders to pay bills, recharge prepaid airtime and buy cinema tickets from their mobile phone, anywhere, anytime. It will be possible to access Movida either through a menu-based USSD mobile technology, or an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) in multiple languages. The service is designed to operate across all mobile networks using any payment card – Visa and non-Visa.

Rajiv Sabharwal, Executive Director, ICICI Bank, said: “This tie-up with Movida provides an added facility in an array of mobile payment options that ICICI Bank offers to its customers. We have seen a high level of demand from consumers to use their mobile phones for financial transactions. We are constantly innovating to meet this demand and empower our customers with solutions that offer greater choice and more convenience. This service by Movida will ensure they can get immediate access to a secure and simple solution that can be utilized even without an active internet connection.”

Naushad Contractor, Movida’s President and Head of the Visa-Monitise joint venture in India, stated: “A growing population of more than 1.2 billion coupled with widespread access to a mobile phone, make a strong case for a vast mobile payments opportunity. Mobile payments users spend significantly less time and energy paying their bills, recharging their phones or those of family or friends, or waiting in line to buy tickets to the next blockbuster, because they are able to do it on the go and around the clock. The mobile payment services which will succeed in India are simple, interoperable solutions that solve a real consumer need and can apply to any handset, without the need for a technology upgrade or a new purchase. They must be highly secure, reliable and provided by trusted partners. These are the premises of the Movida solution, and we are delighted to be working with ICICI Bank to provide this service to its customers.”

Cardholders will be able to make payments through Movida’s secured connection after linking their payment card to their mobile phone number registered with ICICI Bank. Their card account information will be kept secure by a unique PIN number.

So Where Does NFC Fit into Mobile Payments?

On a slow news day today in the world of payments, we noticed an interesting juxtaposition between a commentary titled "Back in the real world (well, West London)" that Consult Hyperion's Dave Birch posted about paying with PayPal at The Farmery frozen yoghurt shop in West London and an article by PayPal's CEO David Marcus on Huffington Post titled "So Long Cash Register, Hello Innovation".

Dave told the story about paying for for his yoghurt purchase using PayPal on his iPhone linking to The Farmery's PayPal Here app on their iPhone. Dave went on to say that "PayPal have made a real effort to produce a slick customer experience, and it makes you wish that other more conventional players in the retail payment world would do the same. There seems to be an attention to detail in what guys like this do, to be honest."

Dave is then compelled to ask: "Is it better than NFC?" He answers: "Yes it is better than NFC is, but it's not better than NFC could be." He goes on to describe how that better NFC experience might work: "Instead of opening my PayPal application, finding the shop and checking in, I could have just tapped the phone on the PayPal Here logo and had all three steps done for me." But, alas, it doesn't work that way today - in spite of "years of work and hundreds of millions in investment."

Meanwhile, PayPal's Marcus describes another version of the future - one that "can easily and cost-effectively transform a legacy cash register into an interactive point of sale solution that makes it easier to operate a business and adds to a truly enjoyable consumer experience rather than a mundane transaction."

Where do you think NFC fits into mobile payments? Feel free to add your comment below.

PayPal Finds More than 80% of Consumers Want to be Wallet-free

PayPal logo 140x60pxPayPal has published the results from a global consumer study that it says "paints a dim future for the wallet. A vast majority (83%) of respondents across five countries indicated they wished they didn’t have to carry a wallet."

It’s not about replacing cash or your credit card with a new payment method, it’s about using technology to solve real shopping pain points,” said David Marcus, PayPal President.

“PayPal is at the forefront of developing products that make life easier, help shoppers be more efficient, and untether consumers from their wallets forever.”

The beach topped the survey in every country as the place most people wish they could go without a wallet.
