The PTAB issued decisions on April 23, 2015, which found that Askeladden’s petitions established a reasonable likelihood that each of the claims in each of the patents is invalid. A final decision on invalidity is expected within one year."

American Express Launches Plenti Coalition Loyalty Program

Amex logo 140pxAmerican Express has announced Plenti - calling it "the first U.S.-based coalition loyalty program."

AT&T, ExxonMobil, Macy’s, Nationwide, Rite Aid, Direct Energy and Hulu are joining with American Express to launch the program where consumers can earn and use Plenti points for purchasing a wide range of products, regardless of the payment method consumers choose to use. Amex said the program will officially launch this spring and is expected to include more brands in additional categories.

Recent research indicates that nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of Americans say they would prefer a rewards program that allows them to shop at many stores versus a single brand. Plenti is designed to address that need, giving consumers options to earn points and additional value through special offers and product discounts. Plenti will be free to join, and consumers can earn points and discounts using any form of payment accepted by the participating brands, including cash, prepaid and any debit, charge or credit card.

“This is a perfect time for a coalition loyalty program in the U.S., as online marketing becomes more efficient and American consumers become more accustomed to rewards programs, special offers and discounts,” said Ed Gilligan, president at American Express. “With American Express’ deep experience with the Membership Rewards® program and acquisition of Loyalty Partner in 2011, we are the right company to operate a loyalty program of this scale, involving such celebrated brands.”

American Express, Uber Launch Mobile Loyalty Program

Amex logo 140pxAmerican Express has announced a new partnership with Uber - saying it is "a first-of-its-kind technology integration into the Uber iOS app that allows U.S. Card Members enrolled in the Membership Rewards program to choose to earn 2x points or use points for Uber rides." Amex says this is the first time that consumers can use loyalty reward points seamlessly in-app and in real time for on-demand transportation in this way.

Our Membership Rewards program is known for delivering world-class value and we're focused on bringing it to life in innovative, relevant ways for our Card Members," said Leslie Berland, senior vice president, Digital Partnerships and Development at American Express.

"Through this new, slick and powerful integration with Uber, one of the most forward-looking, mobile-based services in the industry, we are leveraging our unique technology to add a real-time benefit where we know our Card Members want it."

Once a Card Member with an eligible Card on file with Uber downloads the latest version of the Uber iOS app, they will see a prompt to enroll their Card in the program - in just one tap. Once enrolled, eligible Card Members have a new in-app option to toggle between "Earn 2x Points" or "Use Points" for Uber rides. Card Members who choose to "Earn 2x Points" or "Use Points" will receive an on-screen ride summary and email receipt from Uber showing that 2x Membership Rewards points were earned or that points were redeemed.

First Data Acquires Perka Mobile Marketing/Loyalty Platform

First data logo 140x60pxFirst Data Corporation has announced it has acquired Perka, provider of a smart loyalty program. Perka, based in New York City and Portland, OR, became a First Data subsidiary on Oct. 4, 2013, and continues to operate autonomously. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“The loyalty industry is rapidly moving from being proprietary and closed to open and interconnected. This shift opens up tremendous opportunities for small and mid-sized businesses to run virtually the same mobile marketing programs as major brands,” said Alan Chung, chief executive officer, Perka.

“We’re excited to join forces with First Data to revolutionize the loyalty space and level the playing ground for smaller merchants with the Perka platform.”

Perka is a mobile marketing and consumer loyalty platform that helps small to medium-sized merchants engage their customers with location-based smartphone apps. The Perka Punchcard service and Perka Flexpoints for retail stores and sit-down restaurants deliver sustainable and highly personal marketing and incentive programs to consumers. The cloud-hosted platform features merchant-validated transactions, triggered offers, mobile messaging, and retail customer relationship data for the merchant.
