Exploring the Concept of Fractional Identity

GP Logo Horizontal 140pxGlenbrook's George Peabody has co-authored an article on the concept of fractional identity that appeared in the Summer 2013 issue of re:ID magazine.

George and co-author Stephen Wilson of Lockstep Consulting propose fractional identity as a lighter weight alternative to the National Strategy for Trusted Identity in Cyberspace (NSTIC).

Supporting the growing demands for stronger authentication and flexible, context-specific exchange of identity attributes, fractional identity takes advantage of existing contractual relationships instead of requiring the shift of liability to a wholly novel intermediary service provider model.

Payments Views: Do You Want a Commerce Identity? I Do!

GP Logo Horizontal 140pxOver on our sister blog, Payments Views, Glenbrook's Russ Jones wraps up his commentary on the recent X.Commerce Innovators Conference with a post entitled, "Do You Want a Commerce Identity? I Do!"

Logging in to a website with my social identity tells the seller that I have an account. That’s all. But using my commerce identity via PayPal Access tells the seller that I’m a buyer. It tells them, minimally, that I’ve set up a PayPal account, attached a payment method to that account, and the account is in good standing.

The post explores the implications of PayPal Access and the little known X.Commerce Segmentation Service and Prospect Score.

Firms Help Pilot Open Identity for Open Government in US

Ten industry leaders — Yahoo!, PayPal, Google, Equifax, AOL, VeriSign, Acxiom, Citi, Privo and Wave Systems — have announced "they will support the first pilot programs designed for the American public to engage in open government — government that is transparent, participatory, and collaborative. This open identity initiative is a key step in President Obama's memorandum to make it easy for individuals to register and participate in government websites — without having to create new usernames and passwords. Additionally, members of the public will be able to fully control how much or how little personal information they share with the government at all times."

These companies will act as digital identity providers using OpenID and Information Card technologies. The pilot programs are being conducted by the Center for Information Technology (CIT), National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and related agencies. The participating companies are being certified under non-discriminatory open trust frameworks developed under collaboration between the OpenID Foundation (OIDF) and the Information Card Foundation (ICF) per the federal government Trust Framework Provider Adoption Process.
