CyberSource 2009 eCommerce Fraud Survey Shows Decline in Merchant Losses

CyberSource has announced the results of its latest annual survey of eCommerce fraud finding that "merchants in 2009 were fighting back against fraud, and seeing considerable evidence of success. U.S. and Canadian merchants expect to lose about $3.3 billion to eCommerce fraud this year, down from $4 billion last year. This is the first drop in estimated revenues lost since 2003. The percentage of revenue merchants predict they will lose in 2009, on average, is 1.2%, the lowest estimate in the 11-year history of the survey." READ MORE »

CyberSource Names Michael Walsh as President and CEO

As part of its third quarter earnings announcement earlier today, CyberSource announced that, effective January 1, 2010, its Board of Directors has promoted Michael Walsh to President & Chief Executive Officer of CyberSource. Walsh has been with CyberSource for over ten years and has served as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales for the last five years. CyberSource's founder, current Chairman and CEO Bill McKiernan will continue in the role of Executive Chairman.

CyberSource Payment Tokenization Adds Automated Account Updating

CyberSource has announced the incorporation of automated account updating services into its Enterprise Payment Security 2.0 solutions. According to the company, "customer billing records tokenized in CyberSource's remote secure storage servers can now be automatically updated with new account information (such as bank card expiration data or replacement card number) via the CyberSource Account Updater Service." Updates from the Merchant Risk Council's Annual Conference

Glenbrook's Allen Weinberg and Jay DeWitt are participating in this year's Merchant Risk Council e-Commerce Payments and Risk Conference this week in Las Vegas. This is the seventh year for the conference and it's completely sold out.

On our new PaymentsViews.com web site, Allen has posted his highlights from today's morning and afternoon Platinum Day sessions. Today's topics included the CyberSource 2008 Fraud Survey findings and PIN-debit for eCommerce.

Jay will be leading a panel discussion on Thursday on "Payments as Business Strategy" - highlighting how payments management is an important part of any eCommerce Merchant's overall strategy, both in keeping expenses in line but also, and, even more importantly, contributing to top line merchant revenues.

According to the company, "Mr. Pascarella brings more than 22 years of industry experience to the Board, including serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Visa U.S.A., Inc. from 1993 to 2005." Intl eCommerce Presents Hazards for US/Canadian Merchants

International eCommerce can be a risky undertaking for U.S. and Canadian merchants, according to new data from CyberSource.

During 2008, 30% of surveyed merchants that accept international orders online stopped taking orders from one or more countries due specifically to high levels of fraud. 76% of merchants in that group shut off orders from Nigeria, 58% froze out Ghana, and 32% slammed the door on Pakistan. Other countries blocked in 2008 included Indonesia (23%), Singapore (19%), Romania (18%), China, Russia, and Vietnam with 13% each and South Korea and Hong Kong with 10% each.

10th Annual CyberSource Survey of eCommerce Fraud

CyberSource has released its 10th annual survey of eCommerce fraud showing that merchants expect to lose a record $4 billion to online fraud in 2008. According to CyberSource, "merchants say the fraud loss rate will hold constant at 1.4% of revenue (same as 2007 and 2006), but continuing growth in eCommerce sales mean dollar losses to fraud are still growing. Merchants are shifting some fraud fighting priorities, perhaps as an adjustment to a slowing economy." READ MORE »

eCommerce Fraud Losses Projected to Grow to $3.6 Billion in 2008

CyberSource has release the results of its ninth annual CyberSource Corporation survey of eCommerce fraud - concluding that" U.S. merchants are succeeding in holding the fraud rate stable, but they are expending considerably more resources in the effort. Merchants estimate that 1.4% of their online sales will line the pockets of fraudsters this year-identical to last year-but much higher volumes spent in U.S. eCommerce means the dollar losses are approximately 20% higher The result: criminals will unlawfully carry off $3.6 billion in goods and services this year-up from $3.1 billion in 2006."

BidPay has announced it is reducing the fees it charges online merchants and auction sellers and streamlining the purchase process when BidPay is used. On a $50 purchase, fees paid by merchants on domestic US payments will be reduced from $1.75 to $1.345 - a 23% reduction.

Results From Merchant Risk Council Annual eCommerce Fraud Survey

The Merchant Risk Council has announced the results of its annual merchant fraud survey. According to the MRC, "this year’s survey was sponsored by CyberSource Corporation as part of its broader annual survey of online fraud. The combined results show MRC Platinum merchants setting the pace for the eCommerce industry in controlling fraud and protecting valid customer orders. The Platinum merchants are 110 of the largest online sellers in the U.S. who share fraud trends and best practices through MRC committees and conferences."

CyberSource has announced the results of its 8th Annual CyberSource Survey of eCommerce fraud - reporting that U.S. merchants will lose as much as $3 billion in eCommerce revenue to fraud in 2006, up from $2.8 billion last year. As a percent of revenue, fraud losses will be slightly less this year-merchants expect to lose 1.4% of revenue, down from 1.6% the year before, and 1.8% in 2004.
