NCR Introduces Web Service to Capture ATM Check Deposit Images

NCR has launched "a new web-based service for easier and faster management and processing of envelope-free deposits at ATMs. With Intelligent Deposit ATMs already making up more than 70 percent of its 2008 U.S. SelfServ ATM orders, NCR believes its new service – NCR APTRA Deposit Gateway – will significantly help the next wave of financial institutions move to image-based ATMs. NCR APTRA Deposit Gateway is a web-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that enables financial institutions to perform check image processing for envelope-free deposits made at the ATM." Record Check Image Volumes at SVPCO in 2008

The SVPCO Image Payments Network has announced it exchanged a record 5.6 billion check images in 2008, up 97% from 2.8 billion images in 2007. For all of 2008, dollar volume also hit an all-time high of $8.5 trillion, up 71% from $5 trillion in 2007. The number of institutions exchanging images also rose to an all-time high of 44 in 2008, up from 24 in 2007. The SVPCO Image Payments Network began operations in January 2005. READ MORE

US Check Image File Format Standard Agreed

The CheckImage Collaborative has announced the creation of a Universal Companion Document (UCD) which establishes a uniform industry approach for populating and validating check image files. Since the implementation of the Check Clearing Act for the 21st Century (Check 21) in October 2004, the banking industry has been rapidly transforming from a paper-based check clearing structure to an image-based system with nearly half of all checks paid cleared as images today. Ongoing interoperability issues have impacted the industry's ability to realize the full value of check image clearing. One of the biggest obstacles to true interoperability has been the use of the check image file format standard. The creation of the UCD establishes a consistent approach for all industry participants to use when processing check image files. READ MORE

Fiserv to Use Viewpointe Check Image Archive

Fiserv and Viewpointe have announced that Fiserv will use the Viewpointe archive to expand its current image storage offerings to its 1,600 check processing clients. According to Viewpointe, "as an archive user, Fiserv joins several of the nation's largest financial institutions in having access to the most robust common archive in the industry. Fiserv will continue to use its current image archive for delivery of products such as image statements, CD/ROMs and DVDs."

A Look At Cheque Imaging In Canada

The Canadian Payments Association has posted a new set of questions and answers about cheque imaging in Canada. Unlike the voluntary exchange of check images enabled by Check 21 in the US, the CPA notes that its imaging initiative is "designed as an industry-wide transition to image-based clearing, with all CPA members participating and exchanging cheque images." Implementation of the new clearing process is targeted to begin in 2008 and to be phased in over approximately a year.
