Visa has announced plans to accelerate the migration to EMV contact and contactless chip technology in the United States. "The adoption of dual-interface chip technology will help prepare the U.S. payment infrastructure for the arrival of NFC-based mobile payments by building the necessary infrastructure to accept and process chip transactions that support either a signature or PIN at the point of sale."

"By encouraging investments in EMV contact and contactless chip technology, we will speed up the adoption of mobile payments as well as improve international interoperability and security," said Jim McCarthy, global head of product, Visa Inc. "As NFC mobile payments and other chip-based emerging technologies are poised to take off in the coming years, we are taking steps today to create a commercial framework that will support growth opportunities and create value for all participants in the payment chain."

Chargify, one of several up and coming recurring billing startups, has put together a nice chargeback infographic that lays out everything you ever wanted to know about chargebacks. They dryly note that "chargebacks are a big problem with consumers and merchants".

Verifi today announced the availability of its chargeback representment service as a standalone offering independent of the company’s payment gateway. Chargeback representment is a managed service that includes end-to-end chargeback resolution and payment recovery, as well as the full complement of Verifi reports and dashboards.

TSYS has published a new white paper titled "Risky Business: Best Practices for Managing Cardholder Dispute and Chargeback Processes in Challenging Times" by Robert Hadden. The paper discusses how card issuers can better use chargeback and dispute processes to have a "significant positive impact on customer relations."

Carly Weeks writes for the Vancouver Sun about increasing merchant concerns about chargebacks -

Vindicia's Gene Hoffman tells us that the new Vindicia CashBox payment management service is specifically designed to meet the needs of merchants selling digital content or "software as a service" online. CashBox helps these kinds of merchants both manage their payment processing much more efficiently (especially for handling recurring payments and for handling chargebacks) as well as providing customer lifecycle management services to optimize top line revenue. Last week, San Francisco Chronicle business columnist David Lazarus wrote about Panama-based Goldwell Corp. and the Chargeback Bureau they operate. Today's Chronicle has a couple interesting letters to the editor following up on Lazarus' story.

David Lazarus writes for the San Francisco Chronicle about Panama-based named Goldwell Corp. and an online service it runs called ChargeBack Bureau (chargebackbureau.org). According to Lazarus, the service, which has some consumer advocates upset, enables online retailers to report consumer chargebacks and then allows them to evaluate potentially risky customers by sharing across the group from the combined database of reported chargebacks.

The AP reports on how online ecommerce merchants are much more actively fighting credit card chargebacks now than in the past.
