MasterCard Partners with Rogers for Mobile Payments in Canada

MasterCard logo 140pxMasterCard has announced a strategic agreement with Rogers Communications to support mobile payment innovation - including the Rogers Prepaid MasterCard available inside the newly launched Rogers suretap wallet operating on MasterCard’s payment network. The Rogers suretap wallet allows customers to simply tap their phone to pay at retailers accepting contactless card payments.

MasterCard has laid the groundwork for mobile payments in Canada thanks to our market-leading contactless payment footprint. This is another step forward in driving mobile payment adoption,” said Betty DeVita, President, MasterCard Canada.

“As a technology company, enabling mobile payments is a priority as we know consumers are using their smartphones as commerce devices. Paying securely from a smartphone puts time back in the hands of consumers, and adds value to a seamless checkout experience for both shoppers and retailers.”

Contactless cards and mobile payments use Near Field Communication (NFC). A chip embedded inside a card or smartphone wirelessly transmits a signal to the payment kiosk at checkout. When tapped, the transaction is processed. By ensuring merchants across Canada can accept Tap & Go payments from cards, MasterCard is readying those same merchants for mobile payments.

RBC Announces RBC Secure Cloud Mobile Payments Solution for Canada

RBCRBC has announced RBC Secure Cloud - a mobile payments service that keeps sensitive client data secure with RBC in the cloud, not on the phone. RBC says this "makes RBC Secure Cloud a safer, faster, more flexible solution." RBC is calling the service "the first cloud-based mobile payments solution in Canada" - and notes that it's "patent-pending".

With RBC Secure Cloud, the financial institution assumes the security burden, since sensitive client data remains with the bank, as opposed to keeping it on the phone. The data is transmitted encrypted and decoded locally on the client's mobile device at point of sale through partnerships with mobile service providers. RBC says the solution is initially focused on NFC but "is flexible and can support new technologies such as bar or QR codes, or other standards, and allows offline transactions."

"We have designed a mobile payment solution that offers a better client experience and increased security than has been previously available, while meeting industry standards," said Linda Mantia, executive vice-president, Cards and Payment Solutions, RBC. "The result is a solution that offers benefits and options to everyone in the payment ecosystem."

"We understand the importance of security to our clients and make safeguarding their personal information our highest priority," said Paul Gerics, vice-president, Information Security at RBC. "RBC Secure Cloud is being built with the highest security standards in mind. We employ a diverse range of technologies and security mechanisms to help ensure the safety, confidentiality and integrity of our client's information and transactions."

"This is a critical advancement for mobile payments in Canada," said Mark O'Connell, President and CEO, Interac Association and Acxsys Corporation. "We are excited about RBC's announcement and our participation in the evolution of mobile payments."

RBC says it will bring RBC Secure Cloud to market by the end of the year with debit and credit on a number of smartphone platforms.

Chart of the Week - Canadian Interac Debit Card Fraud Losses (2006-2012)

Last week, we looked at the history of card fraud losses in the UK from 2001 through 2011. This week, we're taking a look at the history of counterfeit card fraud in Canada on Interac cards - Canada's national debit card scheme - based on skimming.

Interac reports that these losses decreased to $38.5 million in 2012 - representing just 0.012 percent of domestic Interac card volume) from a high of $142 million in 2009. Interac also reports that the number of cardholders affected by this form of card fraud fell to 93,800 in 2012 from 238,000 in 2009.

Over the last few years, Canada completed a migration chip card technology - with essentially all cards now equipped with chip and nearly 90 percent of POS terminals upgraded to support chip.
