  • JPMorgan Tips Hand on Payments Hopes Despite Bailing on Worldpay - Bloomberg - "JPMorgan Chase & Co. signaled its aspirations in the payments-processing industry with its willingness to consider a bid for Worldpay Group Plc, the London-based company being acquired by Vantiv Inc. for $9.9 billion. JPMorgan’s merchant-acquiring unit, which handles card transactions for businesses, has vaulted to the world’s biggest by volume, fueled by the growth of e-commerce. The lender, which had considered making a bid for Worldpay, walked away Wednesday after Vantiv’s offer became public."
  • A Price for Worldpay That Will Be Hard to Process - New York Times DealBook (Paywall) - "A day after Worldpay, Britain’s biggest payment processor, said it had been approached by both Vantiv and JPMorgan Chase, the company agreed in principle to Vantiv’s offer of nearly $10 billion in a mix of cash and shares. That took the shine off the share price of both the buyer and its target, perhaps because the deal makes sense only with some very charitable assumptions."
  • Currency demonetisation spikes up digital payments in India - Electronic Payments International - "In the fiscal year 2016-17 during which the Indian government demonetised high value currency, digital transaction grew by a whopping 55% in volume and 24.2% by value over the previous year, according to government think-tank Niti Aayog."
  • Gemalto’s Assurance Hub delivers adaptive authentication for online banking - SecureID News - "The Gemalto Assurance Hub analyses the profile and the behavior of online banking customers in real time delivering adaptive authentication for online banking. The system activates additional authentication measures only when a user’s session seems questionable but it streamlines the customer experience when things are normal."
  • More than 30m journeys made using NFC mobile phones across London in the last 12 months - NFC World - "More than 31m journeys have been made using NFC mobile phones across Transport for London’s (TfL) network in the last 12 months, the transport operator has revealed. 40% of all pay as you go journeys across the network are now being made using contactless — up from 25% in early 2016 — with almost one in ten of these being made using a mobile device."
  • Walmart is building giant towers to solve the most annoying thing about online ordering - Yahoo Finance - "Walmart is building giant self-service kiosks in its stores that retrieve customers' online orders."
  • Omise acquires online payment business Paysbuy from Thai operator Dtac - TechCrunch - "The deal will see Omise take over Paybuy’s assets and services, which include a payment gateway and digital wallet used by both consumers and businesses in Thailand and Myanmar. Omise is based in Thailand, and it has raised over $20 million from traditional VCs. Its service also operates in Indonesia and Japan with plans to expand in Asia, while it is hatching grand plans for a decentralized payment network called Omise Go."
  • Walgreens Works To Make Mobile App Friction-Free For Shoppers 55 And Up - Retail Touch Points - "Walgreens has managed to leverage its mobile app to encourage usagefrom a generation that is elusive for many retailers: the 55-and-up crowd. More than 20% of the pharmacy’s app users are age 55 and older, more than twice the industry average.Just 9% of all smartphone owners who use shopping apps at least weekly are in that age range, according to a 2017 survey by Forrester Research."


  • OPEN BANKING LAUNCHES ACCOUNT INFORMATION AND PAYMENT INITIATION API SPECIFICATIONS - "Open Banking, the implementation entity set up by the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) to enable a new, secure way for customers to take control of their financial data and share it with organisations other than their banks, is pleased to announce the release of its Accounts and Transaction Information and Payments Initiation API Specifications."
  • UnionPay launches innovative products overseas and accelerates the rollout of its QR code payment - "UnionPay International is now accelerating the promotion of its innovative products and services globally. Southeast and Northeast Asia are the key target markets. According to the latest data, the cross-border transaction volume of mobile QuickPass, the UnionPay mobile payment product, doubled in the first half of this year. More notably, more overseas customers are using mobile QuickPass. "
  • Visa Checkout flies to new heights with Air Canada - "With more than 22 million enrolled accounts worldwide, Visa Checkout enables millions of consumers to pay in just a few clicks, and only have to fill out payment and shipping information once. Visa Checkout is currently available on for desktop and mobile web formats and will be available on Air Canada's mobile app next year. Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations customers now have a simpler way to pay for tickets, seat upgrades or bag check fees online with Visa Checkout."
