  • Amazon’s Alexa aims to be a bank teller, insurance agent, too - Boston Globe - "Fidelity Investments is letting customers check their account balances by speaking with Alexa. Virginia-based Capital One earlier this year let its customers pay their mortgage and car loans using Alexa. And FIS, a Florida company that provides technology for hundreds of banks, is piloting similar Alexa-compatible technology across the country, including in Massachusetts, that it plans to release next year. “We think it’s got a lot of potential,” said Doug Brown, a senior vice president at FIS. “This is a rapidly expanding ecosystem.”"
  • IMAGINING A CASHLESS WORLD - The New Yorker - "In 2013, Sweden eliminated its largest-denomination bill, and demand for its second-largest bill, the five-hundred-krona note (about sixty dollars), surprisingly fell off soon afterward. By 2014, only a fifth of Swedish retail transactions were being conducted in cash. (In the U.S., it’s slightly less than half.) Swedish ticket machines for trains and buses usually take only cards; increasingly, cafés and bars and restaurants refuse cash, too. About half of the country’s bank branches don’t allow withdrawals or deposits in bills. As of a few years ago, “you could see the first signs of Sweden moving toward a true cashless society,” Jacob de Geer, who runs the pan-European, Square-like transaction service iZettle, told me recently. “Many of the smaller shops started putting signs up on their doors saying ‘We Don’t Accept Cash.’ ” "

Contactless payment services are a natural fit for communications carriers, and many are partnering with technology companies, credit card issuers, banks and retailers to develop mobile payment systems that can drive new revenue streams. But the adoption of new payment systems might bring unexpected security risks."
  • Europe to Push New Security Rules Amid IoT Mess - Krebs on Security - "The European Commission is drafting new cybersecurity requirements to beef up security around so-called Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as Web-connected security cameras, routers and digital video recorders (DVRs). News of the expected proposal comes as security firms are warning that a great many IoT devices are equipped with little or no security protections."
