What’s the Difference Between Card Acceptance and a Deposit?

GP Logo Horizontal 140pxGlenbrook's Carol Coye Benson has just posted an article on our PaymentsViews.com blog asking the question: "What’s the difference between card acceptance and a deposit?"

In both cases, money is being delivered into a merchant’s bank account – in fact, a purist would point out that a deposit actually is the last stage of card acceptance for a merchant.

But consider instead a different kind of deposit – something that is more like the deposit of your salary into your bank account. In the U.S., this is done through our ACH system. Your employer sends a file to their bank, and a day or two later money is deposited into your account.

Your bank doesn’t charge you for accepting this deposit – in fact, they are glad to have your money come in. They pay a tiny processing fee to the ACH operator who sends the file to them. But no one pays anything like the “merchant discount fee” that a card-accepting merchant pays.

MCX Adds Paydiant to Power Mobile Payments

Mcx logo 140x60pxMerchant Customer Exchange (MCX) has announced that it will add Paydiant's cloud-based, white label platform to its custom developed mobile commerce infrastructure.

"We are really enthusiastic about the momentum MCX is making as a company. Paydiant adds unique mobile wallet capabilities and proven retail experience that seamlessly complements MCX's existing technology platform. Additionally, the recent addition of Wendy's and Acme Fresh Market underscores the appeal of MCX to merchants of all sizes and across all categories. It also marks MCX's expanding presence in the quick-service restaurant industry," said MCX CEO, Dekkers Davidson.

"Both the partnership and recent additions to our MCX merchant members are key milestones as we work to ultimately bring to market the best mobile commerce solution for consumers and merchants alike."

Paydiant's technology will allow MCX member merchants to leverage existing smartphones, point-of-sale (POS) and payment terminals. It will include an easy-to-implement application programming interface (API) to enable MCX members to integrate complete mobile wallet capabilities and value- added services into their own branded iPhone and Android applications. In addition, the solution will allow retailers to avoid sharing sensitive customer information with third parties.

MCX also announced that Wendy's® and Acme Fresh Market are among the latest merchants to become MCX merchant members. With restaurants nationwide, Wendy's is the world's third-largest quick-service hamburger company. Acme Fresh Market is a regional grocery store chain with locations throughout Northeast Ohio.

Square to Deploy in Whole Foods Markets

Square logo 140pxSquare has announced that it is partnering with Whole Foods Market to support purchases at food venues within select Whole Foods Market stores. This is Square’s first partnership with a national grocer.

The in-store venues -- including sandwich counters, juice and coffee bars, pizzerias, and beer and wine bars -- will use Square Register and Square Stand. Square will not be deployed in the grocer's main checkout lines - but Square notes "by bridging the digital and in-store retail spaces at these venues, Whole Foods Market shoppers can skip the main checkout lines, reducing wait times for all customers."

Together with Square, we’ll deliver options to expedite checkouts, and we look forward to developing new concepts to further simplify and improve grocery shopping,” said Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market.

“Square’s forward-thinking vision and technology makes them an ideal partner to create a convenient, responsive experience for our customers.”

At select venues, Whole Foods Market will offer customers the option to use their mobile device to pay using Square Wallet, Square’s payer application, thereby avoiding the traditional front-end checkout lines. Square Wallet also enables customers to browse venue items and prices, discover discounts and track purchases.

Today, seven Whole Foods Market venues already use Square Stand, including stores in Austin, New York City, Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Several Whole Foods Market locations will serve as "lab stores," testing additional innovations designed to enhance customer service and cater to the changing needs of shoppers. Whole Foods Market, a leader in connecting with customers through social media and responding to shopper needs in real time, sees Square as a great fit for the retailer’s digital-savvy customer base. Across Whole Foods Market’s more than 700 social media channels, the brand posts roughly 1,000 messages per day, reaching more than 7 million followers on Facebook and Twitter combined.
