Glenbrook's Spring 2013 Payments Boot Camp Schedule

GP Logo Horizontal 140pxGlenbrook’s 2013 Spring Payments Boot Camps in New York and the San Francisco Bay Area are now open for registration. Payments Boot Camps are being offered April 16-17 in New York City and May 7-8 in Palo Alto, CA.
On Day One, we do a fast, comprehensive overview of the core payments systems, the perspectives of the constituents (consumers, merchants, networks, processors....) and the economic, technical and regulatory levers that make it all work. We finish Day One with a session on Global Payments, covering both local country payments systems and the critical topic of cross-border payments. On Day Two, we help you understand mobile wallets (along with all the other many emerging payments plays) in context of the overall payments industry.

This spring we are also offering a one day Special Workshop on "Innovation in Payments" on May 9th in Palo Alto, CA.

Visa, JPMorgan Chase to Form 'Chase Merchant Services'

Visa logo 60pxhVisa and JPMorgan Chase have announced that the companies have agreed to a letter of intent for a new and expanded 10-year renewable partnership agreement to better serve both Chase cardholders and merchants.
“We are pleased to extend our long-term partnership with Visa,” said Gordon Smith, CEO of Consumer & Community Banking, JPMorgan Chase. “Chase Merchant Services enables us to build direct relationships with merchants and give enhanced benefits, such as targeted offers and discounts to Chase Visa cardholders.”

Chase Merchant Services combines the capabilities of JPMorgan Chase’s acquiring business, support functions and extensive card portfolio with a customized processing solution that Visa and JPMorgan Chase will create using Visa’s network, VisaNet.

Foursquare Specials for Cards Program Utilizing First Data OfferWise

First data logo 140x60px First Data announced they are working with Foursquare to extend their Foursquare Specials for Credit Cards program to now accept Visa and MasterCard, and most debit cards through First Data OfferWise.
To redeem the Foursquare Specials, consumers simply connect their card of choice, check-in at participating First Data merchants, and pay for their purchase with their connected card. The discount is automatically sent back to their credit card or bank account and they'll be notified by Foursquare of the money they saved.

TSYS to Acquire NetSpend

Tsys logo 140pxTSYS announced that it will acquire NetSpend in an all cash transaction valued at approximately $1.4 billion.
“The NetSpend acquisition is truly a transformational event for TSYS and consumers alike. It enables us to meet our strategic goals of diversifying our business, being a more innovative payment solutions provider and expanding our role within an area of payments that is expected to grow at a 20% annual rate over the next four years. The acquisition also complements our already strong presence in the prepaid processing space,” said Philip W. Tomlinson, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, TSYS.

NetSpend’s extensive distribution network provides consumers the ability to purchase prepaid debit cards at more than 62,000 distributing merchant locations.

PCI Security Standards Council Releases Mobile POS Guidance For Merchants

PCI Council logo 140pxThe PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) announced that it has published the PCI Mobile Payment Acceptance Security Guidelines for Merchants as End-Users.
"When considering mobile payment acceptance, merchants need to go in with their eyes open. And that’s what the intent of this guidance is, to help merchants understand the risks so that together with developers and device vendors they can safely implement a solution that will enable mobile commerce to flourish."

The guidance goes hand-in-hand with recommendations the Council published in September 2012 for mobile app developers and device vendors on designing appropriate security controls that provide secure mobile payment acceptance solutions for merchants.

Visa Launches Mobile Money Managed Service

Visa logo 60pxhVisa announced the launch of a new plug-and-play mobile money platform that will make it easy and cost-efficient for financial institutions and mobile operators to offer mobile financial services to consumers.
The global platform is the world’s first bank-grade managed service for mobile money – meaning it allows Visa to host and fully manage all aspects of a mobile money program on behalf of the provider, from user interface design to consumer enrollment, transactions processing, authorization, clearing and settlement. The new service can enable domestic-only or globally interoperable mobile money services.

The new platform is built on Fundamo’s technology, the mobile money technology acquired by Visa in 2011.

Gilbarco Working with PayPal to Simplify Paying at the Pump

PayPal logo 140x60pxGilbarco Veeder-Root announced that it is working with PayPal on digital payment and other mobile solutions to be offered to Gilbarco customers worldwide.
“Our customers recognize PayPal as a global leader in digital payment, and we are excited to work with them on this innovative payment solution and to collaborate on a number of other retail initiatives,” said Mike Schulte, President of Gilbarco North America. "The PayPal mobile solution will be a cornerstone of our suite of retail applications."

Gilbarco's technology is used by 19 of the top 20 convenience store operators in the U.S. Don Kingsborough, PayPal vice president for retail services, blogged about the partnership here.

First Data Releases January 2013 SpendTrend

First data logo 140x60px First Data has released its First Data SpendTrend analysis for the full month of January 2013 compared to January 2012.
Dollar volume growth improved to 6.2% versus 4.0% in December as consumer spending bounced back despite the payroll tax increase. Improved retail spending was a large contributor to this growth. Retailers experienced a healthy rebound in spending as consumers increased discretionary spending during the start of the year. Retail dollar volume growth was the highest growth seen since August 2012.

SpendTrend tracks same-store consumer spending by credit, signature debit, PIN debit, EBT, closed-loop prepaid cards and checks at U.S. merchant locations.

Cardlytics to Make Consumer Offers and Rewards Available via Facebook

Cardlytics logo 140px Cardlytics has announced that their service will be expanded to allow consumers to opt-in to receiving offers and rewards via Facebook.
“Extending our reward program to Facebook is a really exciting development,” said Jason Brooks, U.K. managing director of Cardlytics. “This functionality will increase engagement between banks and their customers. Now banks have an option to interact with their customers in new media like Facebook, without compromising any principles on security and data protection.”

The new capability will allow partner banks to deploy a Facebook App that integrates with the Cardlytics reward platform. The App will let consumers privately see their offers and rewards while using Facebook.

American Express Announces "Tweet to Buy" Capability

ShopKeep, LevelUp Launch Integrated Mobile Loyalty Platform for iPad POS

Electronic Payments Stimulate Economic Growth According to New Study

Visa logo 60pxh Visa announced the results of a study it commissioned from Moody's Analytics on the impact of electronic payment products, such as credit and debit cards, on the GDP of 56 countries.
“Despite a challenging global economic landscape, the increased penetration of payment cards helped boost consumer consumption and, on average, added to GDP,” noted Mark Zandi, Chief Economist of Moody’s Analytics. “This was particularly true for emerging markets. The increase in consumption parallels the growing popularity and accessibility of electronic payments among global consumers, and the findings point to the need for governments to adopt policies that encourage the shift to efficient and secure electronic forms of payments.”

The study found that increases in card consumption contributed to an average additional growth in GDP of 0.17% per year over a five-year period. Over the same time period, GDP in those 56 countries grew by an average of 1.8%.

Visa Reports Fiscal 1Q 2013 Results

Visa logo 60pxh Visa has announced financial results for the Company's fiscal first quarter 2013. Q12013 highlights include:
  • Payments volume growth, on a constant dollar basis, for the three months ended September 30, 2012, on which fiscal first quarter service revenue is recognized, was 6% over the prior year at $1.0 trillion.

  • Cross-border volume growth, on a constant dollar basis, was 11% for the three months ended December 31, 2012.

  • Total processed transactions, which represent transactions processed by VisaNet, for the three months ended December 31, 2012, were 14.2 billion, a 4% increase over the prior year.
