PayPal Introduces PayPal Payments

PayPal logo 140pxPayPal has introduced what it's calling a "comprehensive revamp" of its products - focusing on being a complete payments provider for small businesses. In a blog post by PayPal's Ed Eger, PayPal noted that it has dropped the word "website" from its US product names - highlighting its move away from its traditional online payments role to one of providing multi-channel payment solutions for small businesses. Eger wrote:
We already have – hands down – THE most comprehensive set of small business products on the market. Nobody even compares. And, it’s about to get even better with PayPal Payments.

American Express, TNS Launch New Payment Service Provider

Amex logo 140pxAmerican Express and Transaction Network Services have announced the launch of the American Express Payment Gateway - calling it "a payment service provider solution that offers a single-source for all sized merchants looking to establish online payment functionality."
“Through our relationship with merchants, we know they are looking for a more reliable, global and stand-alone e-commerce payment solution,” said Suzan Kereere, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Global Network Business at American Express. “We are delighted to work with TNS to address this need. The American Express Payment Gateway will enable businesses to focus their efforts on expanding their market reach, while we manage the processing, security and service behind online card acceptance.”
The solution enables businesses to quickly and easily set up the ability to manage e-commerce and other card-not-present transactions and provides fraud and card data security for those transactions.

Google Acquires TxVia to Expand Wallet Initiative

Google logo 140pxIn a post on its Google Commerce blog, Google announced that it has acquired TxVia, a prepaid processing platforms with a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) delivery model.
TxVia has also certified and directly connected to the major payment networks, which establishes a solid foundation for Google Wallet and our partners to drive innovation on a global scale and in a partner friendly way.

Payments Views - Mobile Money in the Americas

Service Disruption Hits Visa Card Network

Visa logo 60pxhThe Associated Press, CNET, and other media outlets have been reporting that a systems update caused a "brief" 45 minute network outage in the middle of the day on Sunday.

Global Payments Data Breach

Globalpayments logo 140pxGlobal Payments has confirmed reports from late last week that it experienced a data breach that may have exposed 1.5 million cards.
The investigation to date has revealed that Track 2 card data may have been stolen, but that cardholder names, addresses and social security numbers were not obtained by the criminals.
The company has setup a separate website to,, to answer questions about the breach and its implications. In the meantime, Bank Technology News reports that Global Payments continues to sign new merchants.
