Trilogy, Unibank & Mercy Corps, Team Up to Launch Mobile Money in Haiti

mobile_payments_icon_140px.pngHaitian wireless operator Voila, a subsidiary of Trilogy International Partners, and Unibank, Haiti's premier financial institution, are teaming with international relief and development agency, Mercy Corps, to announce the launch of a humanitarian assistance program utilizing Haiti's first mobile money solution. This program will enable Mercy Corps' cash-for-work, grant and food voucher recipients to use their Voila phones as 'mobile wallets'.

Mobile Money Wins the Social and Economic Innovation Award 2010

M-Pesa_logo_140px.pngBased on the success of mobile money-transfer services in Kenya and other developing countries, The Economist has announced that Nick Hughes and Susie Lonie will jointly receive the Social and Economic award at its forthcoming Innovation Awards ceremony for their outstanding contributions in this field. Nick Hughes (Signal Point Partners) and Susie Lonie (Vodacom South Africa) started a mobile money initiative in Kenya in 2005 called M-PESA, which is a joint venture between Safaricom, the leading mobile telecommunications company in Kenya, and Vodafone. Western Union Enables Zoompass Users to Send Money Cross-Border from Their Mobile Phones

WesternUnion_logo-140px.jpgWestern Union and EnStream, creators of the Zoompass Mobile Wallet, have announced a strategic alliance that will allow Zoompass users in Canada to send cross-border and domestic money transfers directly from their mobile phones. EnStream is a mobile-commerce joint venture company owned by Bell Canada, Rogers Communications and TELUS, Canada’s three leading national wireless operators.

VeriFone Partners with Bling Nation on Mobile Tap-and-Pay Initiative

“This introductory program brings together the best from each market to create a compelling alternative way to pay,” said Paul Rasori, VeriFone senior vice president, marketing. “Bling Nation is combining the payment power of PayPal and point-of-sale footprint of VeriFone to deliver consumer benefits at the convergence of mobile payments.”

Visa Opens Doors for Mass Transit Riders in New York and Los Angeles

In NY, Visa is allowing riders to pay using Visa payWave-enabled cards and mobile phones, while commuters in Los Angeles can use a special Visa prepaid card to ride the LA metro system. Visa has brought similar payment services to commuters in Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Singapore, London and Paris."

Discover Reports Financial Results for 3Q2010

Discover_logo-140px.pngDiscover Financial Services has reported financial results for the third quarter 2010. The company said Discover card sales volume was $24 billion, an increase of 5% from the prior year. Credit performance continued to improve, with net charge-offs down $102 million from the prior quarter and a net charge-off rate for the third quarter of 7.18%.
