2009 - A Terrible Year for the Credit Card Business

"By all measures, 2009 was a terrible year for our credit card business" - so begins Jamie Dimon's discussion of JP Morgan Chase's Card Services business unit - as Dimon writes in his annual letter to shareholders. The unit lost $2.2 billion in 2009 with an additional impact coming this year resulting from the recent CARD Act changes that have recently taken effect. Dimon notes that "in the future, we will no longer be offering credit cards to approximately 15% of the customers to whom we currently offer them" - due to the changes imposed by the law.

Cooperation for Innovation in Payment Systems - Mobile Payments

Marc Bourreau and Marianne Verdier have published a paper titled "Cooperation for Innovation in Payment Systems: The Case of Mobile Payments".

From the abstract:

In this paper, we study the development of mobile payments as an innovation in developed countries. In particular, we introduce five cooperation models that have emerged or could emerge between banks, mobile network operators, and payment systems, for the development of this new payment method. We also discuss the regulatory issues posed by the presence of mobile operators in the payments market."

VeriFone Selects Chase Paymentech as Partner for PAYware Mobile Accounts

VeriFone Holdings has announced that Chase Paymentech has been selected as the preferred provider of new merchant accounts for buyers of VeriFone’s PAYware Mobile iPhone card payment solution sold through Apple Retail Stores and the Apple Store online beginning April 6. READ MORE »

Over on PaymentsViews.com, Glenbrook's Allen Weinberg writes in a post titled "Hosted Payment Pages and Fields" about how ecommerce merchants are choosing to reduce the scope of their PCI compliance efforts via utilizing “hosted payments pages” and its close cousin, hosted payments fields.

Merchant Link, AJB Software Design Partner for TransactionVault

Merchant Link has announced that it has partnered with AJB Software Design, a provider of electronic payment authorization and data delivery solutions, to integrate Merchant Link’s TransactionVault, a tokenization technology to remove customer credit card data at the point of sale. According to the two companies, "Merchant Link clients who use AJB’s payment solution will have an added layer of transaction security without disrupting their current payment infrastructure." Cardis Introduces Low Value Payment Solution Based on Aggregation

Cardis Enterprises International has announced the European introduction of a low value payment solution with "a unique business model that provides a platform to drive cash replacement of everyday small payments."

Cardis says that its solution "offers a paradigm shift to the payment cards business model by introducing end-to-end transaction aggregation - an industry first. This allows for reduction of the per transaction cost by enabling many individual low-value payment transactions to be aggregated into a single (higher value) debit card transaction, without the need for per transaction reconciliation (or shadow accounting), posting or processing at any point in the value chain." Chase Paymentech, Aria Systems Partner on Subscription Billing, Payments

Chase Paymentech and Aria Systems have announced an agreement to "offer merchants a solution that combines Aria's SaaS based billing platform with the security, reliability, and broad currency support of Chase Paymentech." READ MORE »

Just Who Shops Online and then Pays with Cash?

eBillme has published a press release finding that "over half of all customers that shopped online and paid at a walk-in location have annual incomes of over $50,000. The company conducted an internal study on the profile of consumers that use the eBillme Walk-In payment option to shop online and pay with cash at walk-in locations. The average retail order value of consumers that use walk-in payment locations is $251.67, significantly higher than the average order value for credit cards representing a lucrative demographic for online merchants. The study, conducted in February 2010 based on order, census data, and public records assembled by eBillme from a sample of consumers who shopped online and paid at walk-in locations, also looked at some of the key demographics of the customers within the sample." Jeffrey Sloan Named President of Global Payments

Global Payments has announced that Jeffrey S. Sloan, Managing Director, Partner and Global Head of the Financial Technology Group at Goldman, Sachs & Co., has been appointed the President of Global Payments Inc. Mr. Sloan has led Goldman Sachs' investment banking activities for the worldwide payments industry over the last decade. Mr. Sloan will be responsible for the Company's lines of business in North America, as well as all worldwide business development activities. He will report to Paul R. Starbucks Expands iPhone Mobile Payment to Stores in Target Locations

Starbucks has announced that customers can now pay for purchases at Starbucks stores in more than 1,000 Target locations nationwide through their Apple iPhone or iPod touch devices. The mobile payment capability at Starbucks stores in Target locations is the first expansion of this payment capability since last fall when Starbucks launched its Starbucks Card Mobile and myStarbucks Apps. Starbucks stores in the Target store locations join the 16 stores in Seattle and Northern California that currently accept mobile payment using the Starbucks Card Mobile App. In addition to mobile payment, Starbucks Card Mobile allows customers to set up and register a Starbucks Card, check their Starbucks Card balance and reload their Starbucks Card using a credit card. X9 Calls for New Standard for Secure Online Debit Transactions

The Accredited Standards Committee X9 (X9) has announced plans to launch a new effort to develop an American National Standard that will provide secure authentication for debit transactions.

“Consumer demand and industry trends are moving towards more security for card transactions over the Internet”, said Lilik Kazaryan of the STAR Network. Kazaryan is a member of X9 and proposed the new work item. “Currently there are no industry-wide standards for secure consumer authentication of debit transactions over an on-line environment, yet security issues are paramount with card users”. Cash Remains Preferred Form of Payment for US Consumer?

So finds a study by Packaged Facts titled "Consumer Payment Trends in the U.S." which reports that "54% of U.S. adults cite cash as their preferred form of payment". Based upon data from Experian Simmons' Spring 2009 adult consumer survey, the report notes that "68% of American adults have a debit card in their wallet and 67% have a credit card; though only 53% of adults may be considered active credit card users with transactions in the last thirty days."

Boingo Introduces iPhone App to Enable Purchase of Wi-Fi Credits

Boingo Wireless has announced a new application designed for iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad users that "allows consumers to purchase one-hour credits for Wi-Fi service directly from their Apple iTunes account. Consumers can purchase the $1.99 Wi-Fi credits in advance or at the time of connect simply by confirming the purchase using their iTunes account login. The credits can be redeemed for 60 consecutive minutes of Wi-Fi access at a single Boingo hotspot, and can be used at any of the more than 125,000 Boingo hotspots worldwide." READ MORE »
