SUBWAY to Use FaceCash Mobile Payments
Doctor's Associates, the parent company of SUBWAY, and Think Computer Corporation have announced that FaceCash will now be accepted at certain SUBWAY locations in California. FaceCash is a mobile payment system that allows consumers to use their cell phones to make purchases at the point of sale. "FaceCash gets its name from its unique security process. During a purchase, the consumer's face appears on the merchant's register to verify identity."

FaceCash sounds like an interesting mobile approach but I don't understand the value of having the face on the register. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but couldn't the clerk just look at the face of the person who has the cell phone?

Mike,
If a determined criminal created a bitmap image that looked exactly like your FaceCash home screen, working barcode and all, except it had their face on it instead of yours (this isn't really that hard to do), then looking solely at the face on the phone wouldn't give much guidance. Since the image of the face comes from our server, we eliminate phone tampering as a source of possible fraud. Criminals would have to tamper with our servers instead, which is generally harder for them and easier for us to monitor.
