Card Companies Asked About Aggressive Sales Tactics by Online Companies

Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has sent letters to Visa, American Express, and MasterCard asking them what they know about the aggressive online sales tactics many online companies use to charge consumers’ credit cards for unwanted club memberships. An earlier Committee staff report found that "millions of online consumers have been enrolled in these membership clubs and their credit card or debit cards have been charged even though they never provided the companies with their sixteen digit credit card or debit card numbers." EA SPORTS Launches Prepaid Visa Debit Card with Rewards

Electronic Artshas announced that it has "made it easier for loyal gamers to buy their favorite EA SPORTS™ titles with the launch of the first-ever EA SPORTS branded prepaid debit card. The reloadable prepaid debit card enables users to receive a percent back from every purchase at thousands of brick-and-mortar and online retailers to redeem points (“EA SPORTS Rewards Points”) that can be used to purchase select EA SPORTS game titles." First Data Releases Black Friday Consumer Spending Data

First Data Corporation has released its First Data SpendTrend™ transaction data from Black Friday 2009 as compared to last year. SpendTrend tracks same store consumer spending via credit, signature debit, PIN debit and EBT cards.

Overall transactions on Black Friday showed a growth of 7.9% over 2008 and were in line with the overall transaction growth in October 2009 which was 8.2%. Same store sales volume increased 4.8% led by "solid growth among value merchants." READ MORE »

Scotiabank Introduces Mobile Banking Services

Scotiabank has announced two new mobile services to help keep customers informed. The first is Scotia InfoAlerts, a service that notifies customers via text message or e-mail of transactional activities in their accounts. The second is an application for the iPhone and iPod touch or Blackberry smartphones, providing Canadians with a GPS locator for Scotiabank branches and ATMs. READ MORE »

FDIC Releases Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has released the findings of its FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, "breaking new ground in gaining understanding of which Americans remain outside the banking system. The survey, conducted on behalf of the FDIC by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, was a supplement to the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey during January 2009. The study, which is the most comprehensive survey to date of the unbanked and underbanked, reveals that more than one quarter (25.6 percent) of all households in the United States are unbanked or underbanked and that those households are disproportionately low-income and/or minority." Vindicia Adds PayPal to CashBox

Vindicia has announced it has broadened its payment method support by integrating PayPal with its billing solution, CashBox. Vindicia supports both PayPal Express Checkout and PayPal's recurring billing solution. According to the company, "these new features, in addition to the company's best-of-breed processor support and additional capabilities such as offer management, sales tax calculation, automated payment retry logic and fraud screening, provide a compelling billing experience for online vendors." MRC Details Keynote Speakers for 2010 Conference, March 16-18, in Las Vegas

The Merchant Risk Council (MRC) has announced its keynote speakers for the MRC’s 2010 Annual e-Commerce Payments and Risk Conference at the Wynn Las Vegas Resort on March 16-18, 2010. Wayne Best, economist from Visa, Inc. will deliver the opening keynote address, while Bob Carr, founder and CEO of Heartland Payment Systems and Bill Kurtis, investigative reporter and television personality, provide the conference’s closing keynote speeches. Tempo Powers Arthritis Foundation Debit Cards

Tempo has announced that the Arthritis Foundation will be offering its members and contributors an affinity debit card powered by Tempo. According to Tempo, "every time Arthritis Foundation debit cards are used to make a purchase, the organization will receive a portion of standard card transaction fees. The cards can be used anywhere Debit MasterCard cards are accepted and also provide cash-back and ATM withdrawal access to the cardholders’ existing checking accounts." READ MORE »

2009 mCommerce Market Map Available from FirstPartner

FirstPartner, a UK-based research firm, has published a 2009 mCommerce Market Map. According to FirstPartner, "the market map provides an overview of the mCommerce solution market, its value chain and the ecosystem." An evaluation version is available in PDF form - watermarked and with printing disabled. A fee version is also available without the watermark and with printing allowed.

Firethorn Releases Mobile Commerce Consumer Survey Results

Firethorn has published a white paper providing findings from a study evaluating "the mindset, technology behaviors and future adoption practices of the general market for both mobile banking and commerce. The study found that mobile phones aren’t just for talking anymore. For consumers, they’ve become indispensable tools that keep them organized and informed – including applications that can help them with mobile banking and retail transactions. A majority (59 percent) of consumers surveyed said they’re interested in using their phone to purchase items at a cash register the same way they would with a debit or credit card. With this stat, one can see that consumers are ready to participate in a behavioral shift made possibly by mobile technology."

Travelex, Monitise to Develop Mobile Services

Travelex has announced an agreement with Monitise to launch mobile services for its 1.75m global Cash Passport cardholders. Cash Passport, a prepaid travel money card available in seven currencies, offers a secure and convenient way to carry money overseas. Cardholders can use their Cash Passport to pay for things and withdraw cash, just as they would with any other card, but without charges for use overseas.

Travelex and Monitise are developing an application which can be downloaded to the cardholder’s handset, allowing them to check their balance at any time, reload the card by mobile and also set up other alerts. The service will launch next year with a low balance alert, reminding cardholders to reload. READ MORE »

GlobalPlatform Enhances Internet Connectivity Support

GlobalPlatform has announced the launch of the GlobalPlatform Card Networked Framework v1.0. According to GlobalPlatform, "the technical document - which can be downloaded at http://www.globalplatform.org/specificationscard.asp - introduces new concepts that will allow GlobalPlatform cards to support a sophisticated networked environment." The GlobalPlatform Card Networked Framework v1.0 will be of particular interest to mobile network operators as many of their networks are IP based and there is a long-term requirement to upgrade to 4G networks and capabilities. Discover: Small Business Economic Confidence Plunges in November

Discover has announced that its latest Discover Small Business Watch index of economic confidence among America’s small business owners "plummeted in November, as more owners cited serious concerns about cash flow and saw economic conditions for their own businesses getting worse. The Discover Small Business Watch index fell 12 points in November to 76.5 from 88.5 in October." READ MORE »

Bank of America Announces Credit Card Clarity Initiative

Bank of America has announced the launch of a new Credit Card Clarity Commitment - "a one-page summary of customers' rates, fees, and payment information." Bank of America says it is "the first bank to provide each cardholder with a clear and simple explanation of this kind." BofA says that its Credit Card Clarity Commitment will be sent to its 40 million current cardholders beginning in December and will be available to new customers next year. READ MORE »
