More on Chase Paymentech's Cyber Holiday Pulse Index
With holiday shipping deadlines now history for most e-commerce retailers, the Chase Paymentech Cyber Holiday Pulse Index continues to show an increase from last year. The Index, an annual measurement of online shopping activity during the holiday season, tracks e-commerce spending activity across a sample of 25 of the leading online merchants as listed by Internet Retailer. The measurement indicates both sales volume and transaction count for online purchases crossing Chase Paymentech’s global processing platforms.
To date, transaction count for the holiday shopping season is ahead of last year by 21 percent, while sales are ahead of last year by 8 percent. The average ticket, or value spent per transaction, remains down by 11 percent versus 2007.
“The Pulse Index charts illustrate that e-commerce compares favorably in 2008 over last year,” said Mia Shernoff, marketing executive for Chase Paymentech. “We have had a significant increase in transaction count and a modest increase in sales volume.”
Said Shernoff, “While the increase in sales and transactions is good news, there are reasons to be cautious. Our daily average ticket has remained down throughout the shopping season. Plus, the shorter holiday season this year means we have fewer days to compare between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That will bring our overall increases down.” She concluded, “Our final results will be apparent in a couple of weeks.”
