Gas Stations Offer Discounts for Cash But Consumers Use Credit

Tags » Interchange Fees, Merchants

Kathy Chu reports for USA Today on gas stations wanting to encourage customers paying with cash rather than credit cards - but finding that with higher gasoline prices that consumers are wanting to pay with credit cards more often because they "don't have enough cash on hand."

due to the high cost of gas consumers can't pay with cash because they don't have it. so more gas purchases are being made with credit cards which results in the gas stations loosing more profit due to already high interchange fees. of course if the consumers couldn't resort to paying with credit then they wouldn't be buying gas or at least not as much gas. in either situation the gas stations loose. poor gas stations can't win; i can't believe i just said that.
