Glenbrook's Roundtable on the Structure of the Merchant Marketplace

Tags » Glenbrook, Glenbrook Payments Education, Merchant Payment Solutions, Merchants

Glenbrook's next roundtable on the Structure of the Merchant Marketplace will be held June 10th in Santa Clara, California. Registration is now open. Allen Weinberg and Carol Coye Benson will be taking a special look "under the covers" – focusing on the key industry verticals within the U.S. merchant marketplace.

They'll be answering questions like: what are merchants' real requirements from payments systems? and which emerging payments systems will win big – and which will wither away – in the years to come?

For each of the key industry verticals within the U.S. merchant marketplace. the session will address these critical questions:

  • How big is the vertical?
  • How many merchants?
  • How many transactions?
  • How much concentration (big vs. small)?
  • Is it national? Local? Global?
  • What are the current payments types accepted, and why? What is the history behind this?
  • What do merchants in the vertical care about when it comes to payments? Is is check-out speed? Fraud control? Acceptance cost? Customer loyalty programs? What is the relative importance of these factors to the merchants? How does it vary among them (big vs. small, again)
  • What emerging payments programs are being used? Why? What are the criteria for evaluating their success? Have their been emerging payments failures? What and why?

The list of industry verticals that we will examine include:

  • eRetailing
  • Digital Goods
  • Airlines
  • Groceries
  • Quick Service Restaurants
  • Public Transit
  • Utilities
  • Cable TV
  • Telecom
  • Governments
  • Petroleum
  • "Big Box" Retailers
  • Hotels
  • Non-Profits
  • Healthcare
  • Vending Machines
