Digital Money Forum - Day 2 - Meet the Bloggers Panel
At mid-day today at the Digital Money Forum in London, five of us bank/payments bloggers took the stage for a lively discussion about blogs in financial services. The participants were Dave Birch from the Digital Money Forum blog (and the superb producer/director of this whole Forum!), Chris Skinner of TheFinanser.com, Colin Henderson of The BankWatch, Aneace Haddad of Aneace's Blog, and me, Scott Loftesness, of Payments News. The panel was introduced and deftly moderated by Steve Bowbrick.
We each provided a bit of background perspective on how and why we blog before answering questions from the audience. It was interesting to hear how Chris and Colin started blogging while in between roles as a way to build an online profile. Aneace spoke about his desire to express some of his opinions directly rather than through any filters while Dave spoke about the opportunity his blog provides to analyze and share his thoughts about current payments industry topics. Each of us spoke in our own way about the feedback and serendipity aspect of blogging - and how that's a fulfilling part of what's fun about doing it.
Questions included how much time do we spend blogging (30-45 minutes a day seemed about right for several of us), what worries us if anything, and what our succinct advice might be for someone wanting to dive in an start blogging. On that question, our answers ranged from "be yourself" to "be provocative". Steve added his perspective that for best results he tries to make his posts open-ended and not tied-off opinions, helping to provide a platform for further discussion by his readers.
All in all, I'm sure that all of us on the blogger panel had a great time!
