US Treasury Plans Social Security Debit Card - Direct Express
Eleanor Laise reports for the Wall St. Journal on plans by the US Treasury Department to "introduce a prepaid debit card for Social Security recipients in an effort to provide safer and cheaper benefits payments." The card will be issued by Comerica Bank.

who is going to pay for this? will the merchant be required to have a pin pad for this PIN-based system? will Comerica charge the merchant? will the cardholder be charged? how will this be accepted by the merchants when they have to accept credit and debit cards now? Seems like this is another example of the feds being told it will be good for them but what about the merchants and the cardholders?
