A Look Inside PayPal Merchant Services
A friend sends along a suggestion that payments professionals interested in a look inside PayPal and its merchant services efforts may want to purchase a copy of a Harvard Business School case titled "PayPal Merchant Services".
The case, originally published in April 2006 and updated earlier this year, provides an interesting glimpse inside PayPal, provides insights into its evolution in providing payment services to small merchants, and how PayPal management was preparing for an entry by Google (to be known eventually as Google Checkout) into online payments.
The authors, Thomas Eisenmann and Lauren Barley, said the learning objective from this PayPal case is to "illustrate competitive dynamics and pricing strategies in a two-sided networked market. Also, to explore a platform provider's options for responding to the threat of "envelopment" by an adjacent platform that can bundle its functionality with that of the target platform."
The case can be purchased for either electronic download or in hard copy for $6.95 - you can pay with Visa, MasterCard and American Express - but not with PayPal or, for that matter Google Checkout!
