Stop & Shop Issues Statement
The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company issued a press release late today updating news of an earlier suspected security breach: "On Monday night, associates in our Coventry, Rhode Island, Stop & Shop noticed suspicious activity at the front of the store near our cash registers. Our associates called the Coventry Police, who responded immediately and arrested four individuals."
These arrests stem from an ongoing investigation of the recent theft of credit and debit card account data through illegal tampering of Stop & Shop's electronic card transaction pin pad units. We are hopeful that these arrests will bring those responsible for these crimes to justice. Stop & Shop continues to cooperate fully with the authorities during this ongoing investigation. When Stop & Shop first learned of these crimes, it was our priority to protect our customers and aid the police and Secret Service in their investigation. We immediately reached out to the local law enforcement authorities, our credit and debit card processors, and the public through the media to both alert them and offer support.
Stop & Shop would like to express our gratitude to the police departments in Coventry and Cranston, as well as the Rhode Island Attorney General's office. We also would like to thank the media for getting our message out to the public. Special thanks also go out to all our Stop & Shop personnel who worked so hard to respond to this pin pad incident in a manner which would protect and help our customers and particularly our store associates in the Coventry store for their vigilance and quick action last night. Finally, and most importantly, we would like to thank our customers for their patience, understanding and support throughout this matter.
