Umpqua Bank's New Neighborhood Stores
Umpqua Bank has announced it has begun construction on its first neighborhood store in Portland, Oregon's Beaumont neighborhood. According to the bank, this location is the first example of Umpqua's new neighborhood store strategy. "Like cafes and other gathering places, Umpqua's neighborhood stores embed into established neighborhoods, providing residents and visitors with an engaging space to browse local merchandise, shop online, enjoy a cup of coffee, and learn about community events and resources -- in addition to banking."
The stores are designed as neighborhood hubs -- smaller spaces where every square inch is maximized to provide personalized, community-focused experiences. In addition to the Fremont store, several Portland neighborhood store sites are in various stages of planning and acquisition."This new strategy allows us to be nimble in new and existing markets in order to increase convenience for customers. We're proving it's possible to create community and foster connections between businesses, organizations and consumers by offering a thoughtful combination of products, services, information and resources," said Ray Davis, president and CEO of Umpqua Bank. "As we continue to grow, these stores are an extension of Umpqua's commitment to community banking."
Unlike traditional banks, Umpqua's new neighborhood stores feel more like a retail space with features that include in-depth community information and resources, distinctive merchandise from local businesses, comfortable booths equipped with computers and an electronic "daily specials" menu introducing users to neighborhood events and resources as well as bank products. The stores will also feature enhanced technologies like cash recyclers that not only maximize space but also improve store associate efficiency.
Umpqua's neighborhood stores will introduce a one-of-a-kind, interactive Discover Wall. This multi-screen display will deliver a choreographed video experience to customers as well as an interactive presentation of bank products and services. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags embedded in product information pieces, the Discover Wall will respond to areas of customer interest with custom information and direct customers to more in-depth financial tools on nearby laptops and displays.
