PayPal Mobile - Text to Buy and Text to Give Update
PayPal has updated it's Text to Buy offer page this morning with twenty-two examples of items that can be easily purchased using PayPal Mobile's new Text to Buy feature. Included are goods from merchants including shirts, DVD's, watches, tools as well as items from charitable organizations such as Unicef, Amnesty International, Starlight Starbright, and more.
Last fall, the wireless industry and NeuStar worked with the American Red Cross to implement a "text to give" solution to enable donations to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. With that approach, the charges ($5) were added to your next cellular service bill. A confirmation process was also involved - using SMS rather than the IVR approach that PayPal appears to be using for payment confirmation.
