DoCoMo Dreams Big
Yukako Ono writes for Japan's Asahi.com about NTT DoCoMo's new DCMX contactless mobile payment service phones containing Sony Corp.'s Felica contactless IC chip.
With the cellphone market at the saturation point, DoCoMo expects a much-needed new stream of revenue--following i-mode fees for data traffic. The carrier will earn commissions from shops and restaurants for payments through DCMX. The company refused to estimate expected revenue, however. DoCoMo also hopes that a service unique to the carrier will help it retain customers and attract new ones, after the number portability system is introduced in autumn.Meanwhile, DoCoMo just reported lower profits and sales for 2005 and set expectations an additional decline in 2006 as competition from number portability intensifies later this year.
