Merchant Bank Card Acceptance Costs
Emily Le Coz writes for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal about merchants, including Waffle House and McDonald's, moving to accept bank cards, some of the costs merchants have to absorb in the process, and the return on investment they experience as a result.
Even when they want to accept plastic, some restaurant owners don't because they see it as cost-prohibitive. They must purchase a credit-card terminal, get a second phone line, or even obtain high-speed Internet access."It cost me about $5,000 per store to get set up," said Robert Tomey, who just started taking cards at his Amory, Aberdeen, Houston and Vernon, Ala. McDonald's. The most expensive purchase, he said, was the heightened Internet security to ensure hackers can't access customer credit card information.
