An Ecommerce Merchant's Frustration With Bank Cards
In an article titled 'How Mastercard, Visa Seem To Be Strangling Ecommerce," Marketing Sherpa publisher Anne Holland writes about her company's recent experience with their merchant acquirer's ecommerce merchant risk management practices.
Turns out, as she describes in her article, her company's been too successful this month, exceeded the monthly payment volume threshold established by her acquirer, and, as a result, her company's Visa/MasterCard transactions are now being systematically declined. She says the cutoff occurred late Friday night.
You can hear her frustration as she concludes her comments:
Well, all I can say is thank goodness for American Express and Discover. These two companies sidestep the archaic regs that hem in Visa and MC and are more than happy to take our business. Even when we do really well. She's blaming Visa and MasterCard -- but the root cause issue here isn't them but, rather, her acquirer's risk management practices -- which can and do vary from acquirer to acquirer. For the next 48 hours if you want to order from us, you'll have to use Amex or Discover. ... And you know what? That's just fine with me. I'm fed up with the other two card brands right now.
