Coinstar Corners The Supermarket
Clayton Park reports for the King County Journal (WA) on Coinstar, the Bellevue, Washington-based company perhaps best known for their coin counting machines in supermarkets (which, by the way, count about $2 billion in coins a year).
In addition to DVDs at fast-food outlets, the company these days offers everything from prepaid gift cards, prepaid credit cards and prepaid wireless minutes to gumballs, coin-operated kids' pony rides and skill-crane machines that offer prizes such as stuffed animals and other toys. It has more than 57,000 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, which include supermarkets, drugstores, restaurants and truck stops.Coinstar in 2005 also launched a new ``Coin to Card'' program, which allows users to exchange loose change for prepaid gift cards or credits good at Starbucks, Pier 1 Imports, Amazon.com and other retailers.
