A Look At E-Money In Japan
Kensuke Nakazawa writes for Yomiuri Shimbun on the evolution of e-money in Japan - being driven by increasing competition between two rival systems: Sony Corp.-sponsored Bitwallet Inc., and East Japan Railway Co.'s Suica.
But e-money operators will have to standardize scanners to spread their products. As scanners for e-money, including noncontact credit cards, currently are differently designed, shops are required to have as many scanners as the types of e-money they can process. It is not only a matter of cost to introduce many scanners. If the space in front of counters, where eye-catching commodities are usually displayed, is occupied by scanners, it may hurt profits.
