Consider giving a gift card from a retailer, rather than from a credit card company. Though gift cards offered by credit card issuers can be used anywhere, they usually impose more fees and restrictions. All the major credit card gift cards analyzed in Bankrate.com's gift card survey had expiration dates, and some expired in six months. Of the 20 top retail gift cards surveyed, only four had expiration dates, from two to five years.
