Paying Utility Bills With Credit Cards Just Delays Pain

Tags » Bill Payment, Consumer Debt, Credit Card Debt Counseling, Credit Cards

Nick Bunkley writes for the Detroit News on the risks of using credit cards to pay higher utility bills this winter - unless you're sure you're going to pay your credit card bill off in full each month.

Credit cards are not inherently bad, but careless use can create problems, said Courtney Scruggs, spokeswoman for Greenpath Debt Solutions in Farmington Hills.

"They can use their credit card," Scruggs said, "if they have it budgeted in correctly and they know they can pay it off at the end of the month." Otherwise, she said, "that utility bill that cost $50 might be almost double in the long run if they take a few months to pay it off. It tends to pile up and it's a mountain before they realize it."
