Ask Glenbrook: Postal Money Order Volumes?
Here's a quick "Ask Glenbrook" question we received:
"What were the volumes of US Postal Money Orders sent last year?"
The answer was easy to find on the Federal Reserve's site: For 2004, $32 billion in dollar volume based on 187 million money orders with an average value of $155 each.
Note that the volume of postal money orders has been steadily declining since the peak year of 2000 when there were 230 million money orders used to move $30 billion in dollar volume.
Moneygram, the largest issuer of money orders in the US, reports it sells about 290 million money orders each year.
