Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker published an initial report on Google this morning, initiating coverage with an Overweight-V rating. Included in the report is an interesting comment regarding Google's current lack of an integrated payment system.
We are of the view that over time it will be important for Google to integrate a payment system into its platform so users can easily purchase content that is relevant to searchers (i.e., premium content from sites such as Lexis Nexis or music from iTunes) but simply isn’t free. In addition, offering searchers the ability to pay for products that are found on the site, if executed properly, could potentially be well received by users and vendors.[Update: On June 17, 2005, the Wall St. Journal Online reported on rumored plans by Google to offer an electronic payment service.]
